Ted Cantu Asks, "Where Can I Get Decent Web Traffic ??" - WE GOT THE ANSWER

GOOGLE CHANGES: Where Can I Get
Decent Web Traffic ?
DETROIT, MICHIGAN – The best thing about having a news site is I get to
shoot my mouth off and speak freely. Try doing that on a press release.
You can never truly speak your heart and don’t get
me started when it comes to quotes. I’m going to just jump right into it….
Look, I get a lot of emails from famous online marketers who swear by,
“Stepping In Front Of The Web Traffic”.

I’m not kidding… that is what these people tell me. I got emails on top of
emails and they are all saying the exact same thing. That is the hip thing to
do right now. Just literally buy some software and ---- step in – unannounced in front of all
these traffic streams on Google+, YouTube.com and other forms of social media. They
continue to tell me that if I put my web site link in front of these people I will get web traffic….
A lot of it… and I will be overwhelmed and this can translate into sales. They got
photographic proof of their bank statements and
they are impressive.

But have you tried this? Have you really tried doing this?
Most people out there are shaking their heads no. I try everything and
although this soundsgreat in theory many of these software programs are
garbage and do not work. OR…. They dowork and the instruction manuals
are poorly put together. For the life of me I couldn’t figure out how to get Traffic
Elixir to work properly. I even got tech support and it never worked out for me.Now
I see programs popping up for YouTube and they are all telling me to do the
same thing. “Just Step In Front Of Web Traffic and The Sales Will Come….
And So Will The Web Traffic… !!!!”

Now here is some truth for you. A lot of these Google+ communities are run
with some kind ofmoderator and they will not tolerate your little spammy
messages on them. They actually kick youout and block you. Just go
ahead and try it and let me know how it works for you.

I can understand the theory of jumping into existing traffic streams but
 eventually this method of
attaining traffic is going to get rejected by Google.
The algorithms will change and you will be back
at square one again trying
to figure out the never ending problem of getting web traffic. But do you
know what the REAL problem is?  ITS YOU….   Most businesses are slothful
enterprises that do
next to nothing in the means of story telling.  Worse,
most businesses have no stories to tell….

So Where Do You Get Really
Hot Targeted Web Traffic?
YOU BUILD IT

The  PROBLEM is that we now live in a voyeuristic story culture where people
will spy on your company FIRSTbefore they decide to do business with you. If you
are running 10% off coupons and expecting the phone to explode off the hook then you’re in for
a lonely and terrifying surprise. Nobody will be clamoring over each other like in the movie,
“World War Z” and beat your door down to do business with you. Oh no chicken little, oh no…. far from it.
 Stories are everything.

I got rejected from this web traffic program recently, (it’s actually happened a
couple of times) because I study everything – and the famous marketer heard about who I
was. He refused to service me and said thathe wouldn’t be able to teach me too much. When
he asked me how I create web traffic I told him about the extensive amount of writing I do and the
kind of networking I do and he said, “You are creating the most expensive web
traffic around… you are building it.” He went on to explain that he buys cheap web traffic and
that is how he gets around his traffic problems.

But did you know Google is starting to delist websites that have too much phony web traffic?
They are lookingat unusually high bounce rates and will take the sites off the SERPS, (search
engine result pages). If that happens to your one website… I am going to assume that you only
have one web site…. That is going to tank your business.
And it’s happening to thousands of people daily.

·         35% Of All Purchased Web Traffic Is Fake
·         Google Is Cracking Down On Fake Web Traffic
·         Web Traffic Companies Will Send Bots To Your Site,
and Not Every Hit In Your Counter Is A Real Person
·         83% Of All Companies I Consult With Mismanage Their Web Traffic

So build your empire, build your company and establish your position on
what your company isall about. And by that I mean to ask, “How Well Do You
Really Know Your Audience?” Most people don’t know their customers or what
they are looking for. Very few businesses have a culture.Worse, they never know.
A lot of companies I consult with refuse to even enforce a simple emailsign up list
policy. So money continues to walk out the door after every random purchase and in
store visit.

Getting a person in the door is expensive. Getting them to come back takes
some effortand this is something that many companies refuse to do. Maybe it’s not
knowing what to do,maybe it’s not in the job description and not the employees
 responsibility. Eventually this is
all going to topple down on the business owner.

WHAT ABOUT THE SERPS? Is Being Number One Still Important?
Search engine optimization is important and being number one in your
field is important.
That is always going to be the case but you know what’s
 even more important? Your
connection to other businesses and tangent markets
is important for lead sources. Keep in
mind this is different for every business. But
you want to align yourself with businesses that

compliment what you are all about.

So if you running a hair salon here is what you need to be connected to:

SALON – MAIN BUSINESSConnect to – nail salon, wedding planner, clothing boutiques,
club promoters, jewelers

Then the other thing you want to consider is what do these kind of That particular
market follows pop culture, popular music, trending videos, and what ever is
happening at the moment. They are really into the – “Now”. They don’t care less
about your 10%off coupon and certainly will not rack up miles on their car to drive
across Metro Detroit just to
save a few bucks.

Here is another example:

ROOFING – MAIN BUSINESS  Connect to – community websites, community
 coupon sites,
DIY sites, landscaping businesses, deck building businesses,
 window businesses,

fence business etc.

Instead of trying to spam existing businesses you will have to create
content that other people will want to use, share and distribute to others.
Can you do that? If not, you better findsomeone that can write some content that
you can use to solicit business with. Stories
are everything. You are surrounded by what you create.

Make sure it’s fresh and refreshing. If I have to read another one
of your John Lennon,Helen Keller or Morgan Freeman quotes I am going to jump
out a window. We need newwords, new analogies don’t just borrow from other
people and try to sustain a profitable business off the generosity of some other
wordsmith. Create your own brand and establishyour own culture. It’s important.
There is nothing more important that creating content that you can pass on and
share with other people. The ability to change minds, and to alter the course
of your own destiny belongs in your hands. Do not compromise your
profit potential by being
completely bland and ordinary.

The worst businesses I worked with in the past were jewelry stores and
parts wholesalers. These guys are usually selling their products based on the
cheapest price or the best deal. Can’t toot your horn too loud there and there
isn’t much of a story to pass on.

·         People Love Stories
·         People Surf The Web To Be Entertained First
·         Our Culture Is Fixated On Pictures
·         People Love To Pass Stories Onto Other People

Breaking format helps. Even a lot of the markers that have flooded the
scene in recent years havesubscribed to the 400 word formula when it comes
to content. They believe that you must stay withinthe 4oo word limit when it comes
to web content. This is based on the press release guidelines when you use a
professional service. But when you have a website that rule goes out the window and
in fact it is the longer articles that get indexed first on Google. This is even more of the case
when the content is original and it
comes from you directly.

I read some time ago that Google only indexes 14% of all websites
based on content. I personally think that number is a lot higher than that.
But let’s suppose for a minute that is true. You know a lot of websites out there right
now are nothing more than glorified business cards with nothing but an address
and a phone number. There is no news going on there. Rarely if ever do these
websites address anything that is happening in the community or in a niche group.

Keep in mind that these businesses do very little but toot their own horn
about how great they are. This is echoed in social media. When that happens
there is no chance tointroduce a new thought, joke, or idea and the company or
brand becomes dull. People stopcaring and shuffle off to the next shiny new thing.
In this economy you need to be flexible andallow some amount of human interest in
your company. If you are sticking to a strict blueprint
of what your brand is all about and staying steadfast to a
10% off coupon type of regimen you
 are destroying your business.

So to summarize here is what you must do:
·         Mix A Fair Balance Of Human Interest
·         Stay Topical With Current Topics
·         Tell True Stories
·         Make Your Business Relatable To Others
·         Show Case Studies  And Invite Conversation
·         Write Articles Larger Than 400 Words
·         Create Better Sales Offers
·         Connect To Tangent Markets
·         Hire A Good Content or Copy Writer
·         Make Sure Your Stories End Up In Multi Social Media Channels

If you follow this guideline you will be able to attract better people for your business.
Make sure you create a solid story that you can stick with in your business. Remember
people are surfing the web for entertainment and are looking for information that is useful.
They want to look over your shoulder first before they ever call you and this is very important
to remember.

Media Gone Haywire - Fall Of The Gurus

FULL MEDIA COLLAPSE - IS IN FULL SWING !!!
Swing you sinners - your day is about done. Back in 2003, the online world was pretty much inflated with half truths and best guesses. Today it is basically the same thing but the only thing different is that we know that some techniques flat out don't work. But in 2003 I remember the online climate to being even more annoying than it is today. Back then there were plenty of people who pontificated over the joys of early retirement. I'm talking about people in their early 20's claiming they never had to work again. In 2012 we don't see a whole lot of these people. The way there were going to retire from the working world was through affiliate programs and lots of cheapie MLM and gimmicky type programs. In 2012 those people did not swing the banner of financially free and instead opted to sit inside a pup tent on Wall Street doing the "Occupation." Different times.

After 2003, the economy took some wild dips and turns and people lost their fortunes. The housing market did some wild stunts too and there were a ton of mortgage people, (some of them right here in West Bloomfield, Michigan) who marched off to prison for a nice extended stay. I was a bit surprised at this as more investigations came into view. Then the house market faced another interesting challenge as people left the State of Michigan in massive droves. The Detroit Free Press had a headline that read - "Mass Exodus".

In 2008 the scene in Chicago was very disturbing. I holed up in a hotel near Broadway and Clark and watched as people jumped off the brown line every hour holding suitcases. This continued long into the night. You will never hear about this in mainstream media because the message there is that things are shuffling along quite nicely. I was intrigued with these young people jumping off the train platform with suitcases in hand in search of a better life. Some estimate that 480,000+ people left Metro Detroit that year never to return.

As the optimism slipped from the MLM and affiliate world something else happened. A score of people lost their securities licenses and went to jail. I came across a list of people who are banned from ever dealing with the financial world again. Its on the web and the number of people who mishandled investor dollars is overwhelming. It has to number in the 1000's. Its right there clear as crystal and black and white. SO many crooks -- so little time. Do your due dilligence and look them up it is quite overwhelming.

Along with that whole fiasco you can imagine the age of the "Web Gurus" has taken some considerable hits. When you start to do a research on some of these monkeys you will find some sheer ugliness on the web. Everything from flat out credit card fraud to phony fly by night "offices" run out of P.O. boxes and other un-savoriness. The worst, (as if that is not bad enough) includes a full roster of horrendous web skills and bonus areas of expertise including child molestation. It appears that there really is no need for extensive background checks on these dirt bags when it comes to working with the unsuspecting MLM-esque public. On one hand these guys do not really deserve to be put on a pedestal by any means. They certainly did not put their time in the halls of marketing or advertising, (think real places like FCB, Doner and Young and Rubicam) but are instead self appointed masters of the obvious.

I'VE BEEN ASKED TO LEAVE COACHING GROUPS BECAUSE OF EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE
My big pet peeve on web traffic programs that I have purchased over the years centers on a common problem. Most of these things simply do not work. There are a lot of hoops you have to jump through to get to the - massive traffic - end of things. The average person is not going to bother doing any of this of course because it involves real work. And real work to most people is a big pain in the ass.

I usually get to the end of one of these big "traffic" programs only to find that the last chapter lacks the critical criteria for online success. One of these guys lives in Commerce Township, MI and actually asked me if I wanted my money back at a marketing show. He pulled me aside and basically told me his program was garbage to a seasoned web guy, ( like me) and asked if I wanted to get my money back. I had another situation where I purchased some Ebooks and signed up for a coaching program and once the gurus heard that I was "The Ted Cantu" he freaked out and called me directly and said I was not welcomed in his club... Why? I asked....

He said that I was too advanced and would not benefit from the club. These guys always spout the same nugget of ignorance and blurt out that you must build a blog for "Extensive web traffic" which is complete hogwash. Sure on a technical standpoint Blogger blogs carry a high PR ranking thanks to being owned by Google but that does not mean that it can deliver high streams of online traffic. That is the case no matter how many you build. The blog thing is confusing for most MLM, retailers and traditional business people. This is due to the fact that it takes time to build them and it is overwhelming. The same can be said for Wordpress and Typepad.... Traffic does not come from blogs. If anything that clutter up the web sphere. There are a lot of crappy blogs out there. The poorly written ones are not traffic ones anymore than the well written ones. This is a big misconception. Anytime that a gurus tells you that you must build a blog first throw it in the garbage..... I test everything and when it comes to web traffic you will want to do something... a little better.

Ahhh.. The Media Collapse?
There is a HUGE media collapse right now. This is both terrifying and exciting at the same time. Its really terrifying for the guys who do traditional media such as phone books and IT companies. These guys might be able to produce large infrastructures of poorly optimized websites and other online clutter but they are not marketers. In addition to that you have the SEO websites which can actualy get you very little web traffic, (yes it is true) unless you have them properly postiioned on the web and even then the traffic can be slow. Newspapers continue to fold and limit their distribution leaving many advertisers less places to get the word out. Now the fun begins....

Look I rant on this stuff a lot so I will have write this in installments but bare with me....

I was in NYC a few years back and I ran into some marketing shmo. That is what I call them in the professional ring because they are a dime a dozen. You got good ones and you get your lemons. Then you got the hustlers who run in between the companies and play hopscotch and really know how to make money. Now, let me get back to the shmo. He busts into this large conference table and announces that he has taken $3,000 of the companies dollars and with true genius like alchemy has magically created 34 click through. People applauded him and hailed his online prowess and I'm thinking -- "Holy Cow! -- fire that guy !! Fast.. before he eats your lunch and mine! He is going to destroy us all".

The Dot Com thing happend around 911. It always makes me laugh when Michigan people say they can recall it fondly. I laugh becuase it didn't really affect them one way or the other. This sort of financial abuse and the mismanagement of funds - courtesy of venture capitalists happend more in California, Chicago and in New York City, (where it happened a lot). The tech wave never really came down hard in the Michigan area because they were so resistant to change for the first 5 tech waves, (multimedia, CD-Roms, and so on and so forth... ). Now let me tell you how this relates to what is happening today. The exact same thing is occuring in the area of online media buying, (think impressions).....

A purchase of $2,500 will get your website logo plastered on 45,000 impressions or user screens in the geo target of your choice. The funky thing is that you will only get 35 click thru's on it. Sound familiar? The big boys in the telecom industry is delivering this sort of thing and it is just as terrible as what was offered 10 years ago during the dot "bomb" era -- sorry for the pun.

Yes there is a better way... and its not by buying text links, building Google blogs, or getting these impressions.

RISE OF THE NARCISSIST
People are stubborn and are very self centered. This is the age of the narcissist and let me add that we are living in the Golden Age. Everything has been pared down to the barest niche and you cannot get away from it. This means that peoples attention is scattered even more than before. You cannot put this in traditional media terms such as network television when we had only three networks to choose from. Now we have 900 channels and satellite radio and a gazillion websites and blogs. When it comes to social media that attention gets spread even further. Worse, the very people you may be trying to reach might only be reading and watching their own media like on Facebook for example.

These are really playgrounds for the lonely.... It is going to be incredibly hard to reach these introverted people. Getting 35 people out of a focussed media blast of 45,000 is still terrible results. This is especially true after ten years. Facebook generates millions on ads but I am looking for sales conversions and getting the phone to ring. I don't want people to just "Like" me. That is not going to get the job done or put food on the table. There has to be a real monetary exchange happening for me to lock onto.

This is where radio gets it wrong too because there is no way to get a handle on who is accessing this media. Media noise is running rampant in this modern age. There are too many people screaming for attention. There are even more people looking to cut out being advertised to which makes things even more difficult. The message from this new generation is that they simply, "Anti Money" and Im they number in the millions. They are anti-corporate, they are anti capitalist and they hate advertisements. Don't forget that there part of the Occuptation of Wall Street movement insisted that people just stop buying stuff. The idea for this is absurd but that was the message that these people wanted to spread globally. It was ridiculous but they hate advertisements.

So how do you reach these sour apples? Is it worth it? Do they have money to spend or do they spend their days rummaging through thrift stores? The car companies think you have to grab the young attention through the help of MTV. But these people have very low self opinion and do not care about things like car ownership.

**** IN CLOSING ****

The web is becoming a more congested place to get the word out. When it comes to making serious money on the web and attracting wealth for yourself and your clients you have to study how money moves on the web. Gone are the days of 2003 when you could afford to be sloppy, lucky and have a little faith that everything would work out in the end. Most people do not realize it but their websites are pulling in a lot of zeros when it comes to web traffic even if they are a top ranking site on Google. It is not enough to float a company or to bring them real business.

The gurus tries to tell you differently and that his affiliate programs are the way to go. That level of business thinking and the people that it attracts are like sewer rats. They are the lowest common denominator and focus on the top grab. I hate MLM's and I will admit that to you. I think it is a waste of time -- especially when you have to support other people.

The web is becoming too real of thing to rely on gimmicks. That is especially true if you are trying to run a substantial company, corporation and want to reach real cash paying customers.

In 2012 -- there is no time for gimmicks.

More to come....

Ted Cantu spits out the truth, and actually works in the media field instead of teaching mere theories, (and unlike many of these gurus phonies actually worked in advertising and marketing.)

Go figure...

Published Gurus and Lack of Proof

THE PROBLEM WITH GURUS And EXPERTSYou should be terrified to live in this modern age. You can't even get your hands on a printed best seller these days without planning for it in advance. Newspapers and newstands are disappearing along with magazines. Bookstores are disappearing and now you have to map out your Barnes and Nobles route before you leave the house to avoid rush hour.

The modern age sucks.

I miss a lot of the bookstore venues we had a few short years ago. I even miss Walden Books of all places and it used to be my least favorite. But why am I going on and on about this book thing? Well in my travels and discoveries I was surprised to see that some of these marketing gurus are claiming to have pulled incredible numbers of clients and leads.

Im not going to mention names here because I will get called out on it. Many authors have read my blogs and I do get contacted occasionally - but lets stick to the point. Some of these authors claim they pulled 937,000 leads off a single website recently. I was a little bit impressed until I got in front of a computer and looked these guys up on Google. I tore their websites apart looking for trigger codes that would talk to search engines that would warrant this type of response. And guess what? I found .. NONE.. I found nothing. I also turned up zero on the links portion of the websites. This boastful author only had 40 links to one of his websites.

So you know what I thought about the whole thing right?

Thats right. I thought it was total bullshit. But the sad thing about being a crackjack SEO is that I can tell when someone is jerking my chain and trying to get me to be impressed. I meet a lot of bullshit authors and web gurus people. I got Xray eyes and can peer into any website and tell you if the guy behind the charade is the real deal or a low life nickel snatcher.

I have to live honestly because it is what I do. Its what I am all about. Gurus on the whole - seriously sicken me. And I have met dozens and maybe hundreds of them by now but I chose to only remember a select few because I have selective memory.

The Newest Kid on the Block is claiming to pull $26 grand off of each client doing what he calls, "Market Domination" --

Im disappointed after going to his site. Its a blog and it is not optimized. It is in pieces actually and is not functioning. This is somewhat of a norm among these types. I have another group out there that does social media. They claim to pull multiple amounts of money each month off of their clients. But their social media buttons on their own website are out of order.
CRACKPOTS !!!!!

The problem with these gurus in my opinion, aside from seeing through their smoke and mirrors, is that they attract droves of poor people. And I got nothing against poor people, (unless they are throwing up their MLM ALL OVER ME) but I find their attention span around these illusionary concepts of what money is and what money is not exhausting.

Don Lapre Dead: An Incredible 10 Year Rise Comes To An End

Sept. 3, 2011 – Don Lapre, the self made mega millionaire, has died due to his own hand last Sunday in Tempe, Arizona. This marketer has created a company with $52 million dollars in sales in one of the nation’s worst recessions in history. This is the guy who got me thinking about leaving the advertising art cubicle and creating a marketing dynasty for myself.

I bought one of his courses on how to create money off of placing tiny classified ads. I made money with his techniques. I got this at a time when the recession was rising up on this country in 2000. I was in advertising and all I knew was how to cut out digital pictures and animate them. I had no idea how to create money or how to pull in customers. Don kicked the door open for me and showed me how this was possible. I was intrigued and I got an 800 number and went to work.

The money didn’t happen overnight as I made a lot of blunders and errors. I tried different products and services and a lot of them bombed. But I could see how making money using these techniques could really work.

911 And The Aftermath
A week before 911 I did a stupid thing. I went down to Times Square, NYC and started taping flyers to the light poles. Being from Ann Arbor, Michigan and not knowing any better, (that’s how Michigan people market by the way – for the most part) I figured this was the way to go. After all, a lot of people come through Times Square and it was going to be a great way to get my name out there in the public. Well a gigantic Neanderthal built NYC cop grabbed my arm and nearly pulled my shoulder ball joint out of socket and grabbed my flyers. He threatened to give me a fine and offered to put me in jail. He got right in my face and started screaming at me. I grabbed my arm back and went the other direction. I wonder if this cop is still alive today since 911 happened the very next week?

Either case, I figured this was not the way I wanted to market my services. I went back to what Don Lapre was doing and decided to do it right. 911 created such a disturbance in my life that I ended up high tailing it back to Detroit, Michigan. I ended up there for ten years. In that ten years I learned marketing and started to create a little bit of money – NOT MUCH MIND YOU – BUT enough. Don, on the other hand went out and masterminded a phenomenal windfall of $52 million dollars.

That’s genius.

In an age where people are losing their homes, jobs, and peace of mind this guy goes out and creates a fantastic lifestyle for himself. Lapre is accused of a lot of things but he never did wrong by me and if anything I owe him and his family a humungous thank you for getting me out of the corporate grind. I would later go on to study with Dan Kennedy, Jeff Paul, Seth Godin, Tom Hopkins, Derek Ghel, and Orange Beetle.

There should be books on this guy because he was one fascinating character. Wealth came in fast and his company grew. Like me he made some mistakes – most notably for his vitamin, “THE GREATEST VITAMIN IN THE WORLD!”. This drew some unwanted attention from the FDA and created some investigations and he had to hire lawyers. I knew he had some problems with investors and that his cash flow escalated to a whopping $52 million dollars. This is one amazing person. Despite his many mistakes he is worth looking into.

The American Mindset On Wealth and Capitalism
There seems to be an unnerving repulsion to capitalism and wealth. A lot of people have written horrible things about Lapre over the last few 72 hours. But there is a definite difference between fraud and bad results. I had some hit and miss experiences with Lapre’s courses but I would hardly call him a fraud. I paid him for some course materials and CD’s. He delivered them. That is not fraud. There were disclaimers on his products that results may vary. That is not fraud.

Work has to be involved in this process and with that comes various degrees of positive and negative experiences and that is not fraud. People were upset that they did not received a boat load of money from Lapre’s teachings but how many of those people actually went out and tried to create a solid business? Dan Kennedy creates info courses and sells them to the public. He has written informercials for Gunthy Renker which supports late night programming like for the Lapre company. There are lot of people who support Kennedy and a great deal of them are not successful. Believe me, I have met a lot of these types over the course of 10 years when I say they are NOT SUCCESSFUL.

The general consensus on American wealth is very disturbing. Laziness is very attractive in the wealth building process in America. Capitalism has taken some negative hits in the last ten years. As the job market continues to crash through the floor it may be the best friend you have. Yet, it is looked down upon. The “evil corporation” mentality ensures that the Ramen noodle sales will keep afloat for quite some time.

2010: Alternative Health and Kooky Religions Are Big Profit
The new space age – new age – mentality has taken over America and has it locked dead tight in a sleeper hold. The danger here is not very obvious but alternative medicine and new age products pull in $333 million every year. That is rising as we near the dreaded 2012.
Here is how the other – Big Boys – stacked up in comparison to Don Lapre.

ORGANIZED RELIGION - $15 BILLION – Annual Sales
PORNOGRAPHY- $14 BILLION – Annual Sales
ORGANIZED CRIME - $11 TRILLION – Annual Sales
U.S. PHARMACEUTICALS - $2.8 BILLION Annual Sales
GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FARMING - $75 BILLION
CREDIT CARD SALES - $612 BILLION

These are some of the biggest criminals in history. Don Lapre is just a small kid on the block next to these ruthless hooligans who sack your health, wealth, and living conditions. I rope in religious leaders into this category too because soul stealing is big business. Pornography ranks just below organized religion and that is definitely noteworthy. Control is a big money maker no matter who calls the shots. You can look at the truth and make a stand for yourself or you can block it out and run away like most Americans. It is a daily truth that none of us are willing to face.

Capitalism on its own is not necessarily a bad thing. How and who uses it for what end offers up a whole slew of unsavory industries.

Don Lapre brought marketing to the masses. His courses were based on his own luck and experience. He introduced it to you on a late night informercial. Capitalism is an American institution. The mere idea is not evil and practicing it just may save your neck.

Regardless of what you may think of him and others who strive for something better in life – he is one of the catalysts in my life that pushed me further. He is gone now and may he rest in peace. Lapre offers a simple goodbye on one of his websites. He wanted to thank the people who supported him in his short life. He hopes that his experience has somehow made a small difference in their lives. I can speak for myself and say that this guy was pretty awesome.

Most of you will never achieve the kind of wealth that he masterminded. You will never have the kinds of companies that he has created for himself or work as diligently. His money came fast and his fame took off quickly and his life became more difficult to manage. He killed himself violently and is no longer among us. Before you attack him you owe it to yourself to study him. He is a fascinating character in American history.

Growing Up Digital: The Changing Face of The Economic Landscape

REMEMBER THE 1990'S? BACK WHEN WE HAD JOBS?
Job culture was great. It was short and sweet. I caught the tail end of it when I worked in Chicago and New York City. Those were fun days. Little did I know that it was going to be short lived. My oh my have things changed. Back in the Dot Com Era my idea of a good time was getting a paycheck for $2800 for two weeks honest work. Now I am able to bang that out in a single day. In the 90's I wanted to work for MTV and be a creative director. Nowadays MTV is little more than Maternity TV. Its a sound board for knocked up teens.

The funny thing is that even in this modern age those annoying teens complain about how lousy thier lives are. That is amusing. We are living in America but you would hardly know it. Now that people are being thrown onto the street they live their lives like they are nothing more than imprisoned inmates.

We have more television channels than ever before, (my carrier has over 800) and gazillions of websites. And do not forget the thousands of satellite radio stations all over the world. Traditional television is mimicking the web. You won't find television shows like, "The Odd Couple", (man I miss Felix Unger) or "Happy Days" anymore because we are all too busy bitching at one another on national television. A lot of what you see is called reality television in America. I am not sure how things are in other countries but in the USA we have regressed to a nation of spineless whiners.

Its war now in America and I am on the street. I know how to sell and maneuver through all the nonsense. I have to tell you that I am having the time of my life. I am a hustler and a self professed go getter. I don't know if I could ever adapt to job culture. It makes me uneasy to have to hear water cooler chatter about birthdays, 3 way love triangles and sharp shooting office politics.

I am too old to have a job according to the New York Times. I am over the grandaddy age of 39 and considered irrelevant by many standards. That was in the Sunday edition a few weeks back. Well this ancient old man has a few things to say about the job situation. If we are going to let our advertising and tech companies fall into the hands of over educated 20 something industry newbies we are generally screwed.

Retail is really in grave danger. Don't forget that the old ways of getting the word out in the forms of television, radio and newspapers is a thing of the past. I'd like to throw the concept of middle management in there as well. Its all useless. Meanwhile, who is going navigate the business populace through all of this muck?

THE COLLAPSE OF MEDIA CHANNELS
Newspapers are falling apart. I don't mean consilidation here I am talking about newspaper companies closing their doors altogether. Radio on the other hand is getting more desperate and its also getting more expensive. Television is just as ineffective as ever before and worse -- nobody is paying attention to the commercials. The only time that the public seems to notice is to watch someone else's wretched life fall apart on some reality television show.

Nonsense aside who is going to advertise for the business class?

Is anyone capable of doing a good enough job? Limo rental in Livonia Michigan uses the web to get the word out. Things are actually pretty bleak when you think about it. Now the old vanguards of the advertising set are suddently the shoulder of comfort when it comes to SEO search engine optimization and social media. Like rats on a sinking ship these old fossils are becoming overnight saviors in the media. I can't blame them for trying to stay alive in this blazing inferno of tech overload.

Does that mean you should do it? Why is CBS Radio hawking SEO services? The web is a complex animal and it is going to take more than rotating banners to sell a product or a service. The phone companies are offering template websites that do little more than pop up on cue. These really under perform when it comes to the vital stats that keep a business afloat. When it comes to creating links, and achieving page rank the crusaders of tech fall silent.

But that is just the beginning of the charade.

What To Do At Your Next Networking Event....

HERE IS MY ADVICE.....

Don't go. I used to get calls to go to the next BIG networking event and it would always be full of people who couldn't sell. They would shove their business card in your hand and ask you to buy their product. There would be a lunch and a pep talk about staying positive and then you would get the boot.

Terrible. That is terrible advice. And the experience isn't so hot either. Warm meal aside you need a better tactic than that!

"WHY WOULD HE SAY SUCH A BAD THING ABOUT NETWORKING...?"

I grew up in the media circles my whole life. If I wasn't in an art room of some sort I was in media studio. In my 20's this continued with the first five waves of multimedia, then it was called Interactive... and now... in this post dot com world its simply called marketing, (which can be a very vague term). Along with this hoopla came showgirls, (yes, I am serious) and midgets for some reason, however, they prefer to be called dwarfs. We would have media parties and this is what would show up... it was like a circus.

Sometimes in Chicago, we would throw these networking events on top of a microbrewery of all things. Imagine, media people with bad weatherman haircuts, hot babes in sequin body suits and dwarfs, rock star wannabees and me. All hanging out getting loose on top notch swill pulling out our business cards to eachother. There was one guy in particular who went by the name of "Baby Man". That was his gig. He would do baby voices for radio commercials in Chicago. He was picked by a lot of banks and did a lot of voiceover work.

By about 10 PM the real party started. Because usually by then half the guests would be bombed out of their gourds. Its a miracle people didnt fall off the side of the rooftop onto the street below. Business cards would get passed and that was the experience. I actually prefer the circus atmosphere to a typical networking event. They are similar in a lot of ways. But one is definately better than the other.

With a cast like that it would be hard to get the same people to show up everytime. It would get dull. I would go to a lot of these and would rarely see the same people.

The Fish Bowl Gets Crowded

The same people tend to go to these events and share one dangerous personal flaw. They are afraid of confrontation. They are there to feed off of who you know and work and quite often, (either on purpose or by accident) sabotage your opportunities. That is why I am not always known as passive cooperative. You see, I rarely allow people to gain access to my clients. Once in a while I am generous if it makes sense but usually as a rule this is something that I avoid doing.

This is people spam. One minute my list is being used to sell Amazon vitamins, the next its being asked to purchase some time shares or some pre paid legal gibberish. Next thing you know I destroy the trust in my list and the people on it. I get to start all over again by building up my credibility. I don't like doing that.

And why does this happen? The concept of selling to a "warm list" is something that is being hawked around by the big sales guys... Tom Hopkins, Zig Ziglar etc. And its a good concept of all parties are respected. But quite often, they're not. The warm list is there for one good reason and that is to take the fear out of selling. But I say you need to leave the fear in. You want honest participants. I want people to buy my stuff from the gut I want them to feel it and not obligated because I am a friend of a friend. People who buy out of that type of obligation often get buyers remorse which leads to refunds or worse.

Thats not good enough for me.

That pool, although crowded, gets polluted quick. Everyone is in it, squirming around, selling the same thing in most cases and this loses momentum and credibility. Anytime I am invited to one of these things I see it for what it is. An incestuous group with greedy motives.

THE FUNS GONE OUT

Its interesting to see one of these pools bust out. I mean completely BUST OUT. I have seen companies implode and move out of entire buildings because of this type of behavior. It is like a virus and runs rampant. There isn't a whole lot you can say to an empty vacant building with a for sale sign out in front of it but I implore you to try. Its the least you can do.

I say you need to protect your people asset. Especially now with so many crappy marketers around.

The next time you are invited to go to a networking event do what Nancy Reagan suggest, "Just Say No!"

Ted Cantu says no a lot. He rarely shares his people list. And he has two books out on Amazon.com and a thriving SEO practice out of Chicago, New York City and Detroit.

Instant Accessibility? Whats Your Rush?

LIVE FROM THE VIPER PIT

In acting classes you get it all - drama girls, pretty boys, and psychopaths. The coach is always in your face and he is asking you = "Whats Your Motivation?". For anyone who has ever been through an acting class they know what I am talking about.

As a business coach I ask the same thing out of business owners. For those who have web site with nothing on them except a phone number -- I seriously have to ask.... "Where's Your Motivation?" -- You see, many web sites that I come across have no sense of direction. They do nothing more than have a picture of the business and a phone number.

Many sites do not sell a thing. There are no special offers, no deals, no reason to pick up a phone and contact the business owner. I see this daily.

The web sites that we come across really do a shoddy job of getting the word out. At the end of the day you want people to call your office and get more information. Many businesses are too afraid to sell.

Whats The Best Way To Do It?
For me the best way to handle this problem is to follow one simple rule. I never want to tell the complete story. I want a lot of information left out on a web site if my intention is to get people to contact me.

The less you tell, the more you sell? Hmmmm sort of.

If I give you the complete story there is no reason for you to contact me. I want there to be a reason for companies to call me. You can do that with sales copy. When you are optimizing a web site there is a distinct way you use keyword phrases. This becomes very important when you create online attention for yourself.

2010 - Brings on Confusing Marketing !!

THE MAD SCRAMBLE HAS BEGUN

I received a piece of gobbilygook in the mailbox the other day. This postcard had some inane scribble on it that defined some sort of "offer" I think -- the message was unclear and then of course-- there was no phone number as to how to respond. It was for a telecom service I think.... one thing was crystal clear on this postcard. There was a logo on it.

What that does for me I cannot begin to tell you. It filled me with questions that would no doubt go unanswered. I threw it away in the garbage and went onto the next piece of mail.... and repeated this cycle.

This is what many companies have chosen to do rather than deal with their own marketing situation. This is not the way to handle a marketing dilmema.

GET DIRECT WITH YOUR PUBLIC
Don't dance around rejection. EMBRACE IT. Get to the bottom of your marketing. If you are going to get rejected than do it quick and get on with it. I like to test sales copy head on and see if it is going to bomb right away. If I wrote a lemon I would rather find out about it sooner than later.

January is gone kids.....

Stop entertaining yourselves... get out there and sell something.

The Cracks Are Showing on SEO

In recent months there has been a different view on SEO and what search engine optimization can ultimately mean for a company. The first thing that comes to mind is that no matter what -- getting to the top of the search engines is paramount.

But at what cost? Do you want to pay to be there or do you want to get there organically as possible. And if you want to get there organically do you want to actually do work or do you look at your overall campaign as someone elses problem?

I am often intrigued with how many times a company will look at their online marketing with distain and disgust. This is your responsibility overall. And this this is something I see companies wrestling with month after month. Its as if the success of their own company is looked upon as someone else's problem.

Look at what we did recently for Kawasaki OEM Parts - for a little company called, www.powersedge.com This is a very smart company who gets it. More importantly when we took on this campaign we employed our own techniques. We literally turned our back on many of our mentors and have developed our own keyword strategies and success formulas. This has outraged many of our colleagues --- You're not supposed to color outside the lines.....

Instead of getting hauled off to the H.R. department - we ousted ourselves from the sugary sweet comfort of our contemporaries and have hit the street. Since we are not in a corporate circle we are fine with that. I grew up with street fighting and this my friends is no different.

SEO IS FAILING

The last 60 days have revealed some rather disturbing news. Googles PR system is showing signs of old age. It is no longer important for a page to have a high page rank thanks to viral marketing. WORSE -- there are new signs ahead that tell us that it is no longer important to link your pages up to high PR pages for good SEO.

Good mercy.

That leaves the boys in India scratching their heads and looking deep inside their wallets. The Golden Age of off shore SEO is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Now you will have to really know what you are doing when it comes to search engine marketing. That means you will have to physically show some effort and some concern to get yourself noticed online.

This means you will have to actually do something instead of just submitting pages to a handful of directories to get some attention.

That has to bum some of you out.

“Building The Online Roads That Lead To Your Website!” - Part 2

Another way to drive people to your site is to always be in the mindset of inviting people to something. You want to think in terms of “events”. Throwing a webinar on the Internet is a perfect opportunity to invite people to something big. It allows you ample time to conduct your sales pitch in a style that’s comfortable for you. You can showcase what you are doing in front of a crowd and have visuals to work with whether it be an online video or a Powerpoint presentation. To me this is more effective than running a teleseminar where you don’t have that type of direct control over your audience.

There was a study done not too long ago that illustrated the importance of dealing with a visual and audio media when it comes to selling. A wide majority of people like to be communicated to in a fluid visual manner. There are a percentage of those who will appreciate a sales letter environment. They will in turn read a great deal of this material as long as it ties in with their areas of interest. You will need to find out what these are and how it relates to your business.

Thinking in Themes
Out of all of the mistakes I see clients make is the inability to think in themes. If you have a target market for Golf for example then you need to think above the obvious. You need to think where that main market splinters off into tangent markets. You want to track where the money goes and how it is spent. You want to figure out where else that customer spends their money on various things. Do they have a different view on travel than most people? Do they frequent bed and breakfasts as opposed to a economy hotel when on the road? Do they like the finer things in life such as premium scotches or watches? What periodicals do they read? And if this is your market then you need to be thinking of how you can get your marketing message into these environments so you can attract these folks.

Some call this process of thinking mind mapping. I call it common sense. You must also keep in mind that not all markets behave the same way or even react the same way. One of my clients recently complained about his market to me because they were not ordering off of his online shopping cart. His customers would in turn call the main office and place their orders over the phone. It did not matter so much that they acted in a predictable manner but what mattered most was that they were ordering the product and paying the premium price. You may have to make adjustments in your marketing and your understanding of your customer as you build your relationships.

“Building The Online Roads That Lead To Your Website!” - Part 1

I see a lot of elaborate web sites being built and sold in this business of online marketing. I see them come in all sizes. Some light up and spin around like pinball machines and others are as dry as melba toast and half as sophisticated. Some are designed to sell, (but not always too well) and others are brilliant but are not positioned properly online.

And for many companies – this is where their pain begins.

If you got a strategy that works for your online marketing you can transfer that to your other sites. But what happens when that technology fizzles out and becomes obsolete. I always think about the technology that existed just a short while ago in the broadcast FAX market. A lot of companies sat back on their haunches and let that technology drive their business – in many cases – right over Niagra Falls. I am surprised at how many companies I run into that expect a fat living from a site that has no proven ways to drive traffic to it. Having high visibility is not always enough. Getting high on the search engines is great for visibility but you always need to place your site in front of enough of the right people who may want your goods and services.

Beware of Self Arrogance
It’s easy to fall in love with your own product or service. And yes, love is blind. It becomes easy to miss out on the necessary details when you are so self absorbed with your own business and that can cost you. Many companies do not bother to build at least 12 strong incoming lead sources to their businesses online or otherwise. Keep in mind that all of these sources do not have to be online in nature. These can be classified ads, display ads, direct mail, yellow page advertisements, pay per click ads, and more.

End of Part 1

Marketing Freaks, Bullies and Pinheads Let Me Down, (Again)

"I'm Tellin' Ya, I'm PULLING A 100,000 BUCKS A DAY !!! HOW MUCH YOU MAKIN'?"

I got three people in this category. These guys are always ready to pull out their wallets and spit out huge numbers of profits. Of course, my eyes are supposed to glaze over and I am expected to shudder in my shoes. I get a lot of this from people... A LOT.

But just recently I figured out a trick on Google and I got to check out how many links they had. I got to see just how "BIG" these guys really were online and how influential they really were. I got to tell you that I wasn't shocked. But I am disappointed in them as human beings.

It sounds too outrageous to be true but I get this all the time.

I won't give you their names or even tell you what they sell online, (My God, they could be reading this!). But I will tell you their numbers.

Are you ready for this?

The one guy who told me he was netting $100,000 dollars a day only has 8 incoming links.

The other guy who told me he was an International sensation only had 7 links.

Another "expert" in his field only had a grand total of 19 links. WORLD WIDE.

So what I am saying to you is this.... Be careful who you are dealing with on the web. Chances are they are not who they say they are. There is a VERY SIMPLE way to check. In fact, I would suggest to do this with just about ANYBODY you want to do business with to see if they are the real deal or not.

Check out my article database too when you have time, (its a terrible thing to waste).

This was posted by TED CANTU and he has 1,800 links! His site also has 8,900 links... Look it up. if you don't know how to look it up -- at least look him up at http://www.1seomichigan.com/

IPHONE ASKS - WHAT CAN YOU DO?

"The World Is Watching - Now What Will You DO?"
The IPHONE was released last night to lines of fans who waited for hours. You can find a gazilion articles posted about the "Jesus Phone" on the web. But that is not what this posting is going to be about..... specifically. I figured you can go just about anywhere to find some hype and heart thumping propaganda concerning this technological marvel.

Now that you have access to technology the REAL question becomes what do you do with it?

You already know from looking at my presentation on SEO in Michigan..... that 100 million viewers watch YOUTUBE.COM a day. That in itself is pretty encouraging. These people come from all sorts of niche markets. The whole thing in a microcosm is pretty dog gone exhilarating.

MEETING WITH A FILM MAKER
This week I had lunch with an independant film maker in the Detroit market. Our discussion went in several amazing directions and touched upon pop culture. We were discussing how pop movements were either captured or even fabricated in front of a camera. Our references scanned the whole spectrum including Saturday Night Live, The Who, and music sensations like THE CLASH.

At what point did the audience "SNAP" and go bananas when the Clash performed in the film "Rude Boy". The live performances were very dynamic to watch. I was focussing on the audience and what made them react so strongly. Likewise I also downloaded a Steve Martin live performance record from 1978 this week. This is an album I have not heard since I was ten years of age. I was amazed at the kind of response he was able to extract from his audience. Martin, before he became a film director, was the first comedian to pack thousands into arenas to give comedy performances.

There was something in each performance. Something memorable. This is what made them so fascinating to watch and listen to. Trying to capture that spark inspired me to continue into other forms of entertainment. I picked up Saturday Night Live - Season 1 - on DVD. Once again I am watching a group of unknown actors revolutionize a media format. To me this is very inspiring and its worth studying.

TYING IT ALL IN TOGETHER
What does studying the Punk Rock movement, Saturday Night Live and rebel comedians have to do with the IPHONE? It has everything to do with you being discovered and revealing your own uniqueness. My questions for you are as follows.....

1. At what point will your audience "SNAP"?
2. What kind of POP sensation will you make on the web?
3. What kind of mass following can YOU attract?

Internet Marketing Center - On Tour

"IMC Leading The Way For Online Marketers - 2007"
Detroit, Michigan March Review

I always get excited when I hear that Derek Ghel is coming to America. The Internet Marketing Center is THE premiere online marketing resource to smart entrepreneurs abroad. Ghel is one of the founding brains in the powerful nerve center that is IMC. This Canadian Internet marketing group is the brainchild of the late Corey Rudl who masterminded an online marketing presence that generated 50 million dollars in online sales in just ten years. They are most famous for creating unique software that can not only garnish attention from online traffic but also burrow deep into tight niche markets.

These guys have been hitting the road now for the second consecutive year. I was lucky enough to catch them in Chicago last March and in Detroit this year. They appeared at the Crown Plaza in Novi, Michigan. They came here for two days and hit the crowd with enough marketing tips to fill up an entire three subject notebook. The staff was about a third of what was offered in Chicago as the venue in Michigan was significantly smaller in size. But this didn't have any impact on the powerful workshops and no nonsense seminars that held the audience spellbound for hours on end. The seating was tight as it was near a sell out crowd.

We covered:

  • Ebay secrets
  • Copywriting strategies
  • Joint Venture and Affiliate Program secrets
  • Email marketing
  • Direct to Desktop tips
  • Online Affiliate programs
  • Web site makeovers

and a whole lot more......

The days begin early at 8am and go straight on until 4:30 pm with time for questions and answers at the end. If you really care about online marketing and want to get more presence for your site you definately need to connect with this tour. I have been to a lot of these and cannot recommend these guys highly enough. They were there from the beginning of serious online marketing and are still there today creating 6 figure incomes for their customers in many countries including Canada, North America and Australia. The group is very entertaining and you should try to catch them if they come through your area. Future city stops include New York City, Chicago and there are dates in Texas and in California.

You can find out more about them here....
http://www.marketingtips.com

Check out their software packages. These guys really do think of everything. They are worth getting and perform like the way they are supposed to. Viral marketing has been perfected and they have mapped out strategies and sure fire ways to get traffic and give your site more action onilne and off.

Redefining The Web: Post Venture Capital Years

In the early days of the Dot.com era it was somewhat difficult to get all the elements in place. You had to get various programmers, talented people, strategy planners and get large host servers to create your own position online. Things have radically changed since then.

In fact, it is getting harder to get financed this time around. In a recent meeting with a venture capital group and money finders association in Michigan we learned the following. Not only was it getting more difficult to secure funds for new ventures but the dynamics of such have become even tighter. This firm gets 6 proposals that are sent in this venture capital firm only accepts 6 qualified applicants for the entire year.

The good news is that it no longer takes 120k + to get your dot.com off the ground. With all the template sites that are out there the ability to go out and create a variety of new sites is practically unlimited. There are built in search engines, google analytics and a multiple of calculators built into the software that can take a business straight to new heights.

The so called, "NEXT LEVEL" with animation and other fluffery is nice but the ability to attract and maintain customers is of utmost importance. There are other factors to consider as well..... Such as the ability to sell and distribute your products and create your own distribution channels. The back end of your overall marketing structure should be considered. This includes your strategy about how you intend to draw the indexing bots back to your site from the search engine - this falls into your seo plan.

The state of SEO in Michigan has been challenged with conventional means of getting top search engine rankings and ignoring new conventions that have received proven results -- in this case, podcasting. This is something that needs to be addressed at the deepest level. If any of these new upstarts are going to stand a chance at achieving a market - let alone -- sales.... Then the new wave of Interactive communication and ecommerce firms should accept these incredible innovations that are entering the marketplace. These include Web 2.0 tools and software that can enhance the overall users performance and bring back a secure market eager to partake in the consumer process.
