TED CANTU: "How Can I Turn My Home Improvement Business Into A Local Sensation?"

SEO:  What Does It Take
To Turn My Home
Improvement Business
Into A Local
Search Sensation?

DETROIT, MICHIGAN – People always come up to me and ask me what it takes to
become a local sensation. What does it take to be found on the search engines and pop
up on page one? There are things you can do that will put you on page 1 in about five
minutes…. That’s nothing new.

The real thing you want to think about is….  “Am I Interesting?” Another thing you will
want to ask yourself is, “What Value Do I REALLY Have To Bring To People?”. The days
of becoming number one on the search engines and automatically scooping up all of
the business is pretty much over in the online world. I mean, logically it doesn’t make sense. Just because you are first in line doesn’t automatically make you qualified to do much of anything.

There are a lot of businesses on the web that have terrible customer service. Yet,
they are number one on the search engines. These companies have terrible reviews
and people as a whole really do not like doing business with them. This doesn’t mean
they are the BEST under any circumstances. And don’t get me started on the dreaded
 10% off coupon offers.
BE INTERSTING –
RAISE YOUR
ENERGY LEVEL

I walked into a vape shop in Michigan the other day to see what was happening. I hear
these guys are the new bad boys in business and what I found was a lot of the same ol’ scene.
I found four guys standing around getting stoned on these metal stogies and looking over
confident. Nobody was on the phone making deals, nobody was checking orders on the
web site and nobody even greeted me when I walked into the shop. This was what
doomed the short lived – “Hydroponic Grow Shops”

in Michigan before they started all folding up and calling it a day.

If you want to make it as a business in Michigan in this new digital age you
need to do the following.

HAVE PERSONALITY – That personality has to exist in your website, your social media,
and you need to talk about things that are relevant that are outside of your industry.
You have to show people you care about what’s going on in the world you live in.
That could be current events, comedy, news updates, celebrity gossip, sports updates
and breaking news. Step outside of your business and GET SOCIAL.

FIX YOUR SALES OFFER – What makes your company great? Why should a
customer give you the business as opposed to someone else?

HAVE STORIES TO TELL – We used to take on anybody and everybody as a client
because being number one on the search engines was EVERYTHING. Now we are
more selective and realistic. We are only taking customers on that have a story to tell
and that can benefit other people. You have to be topical. Your content should
translate well on Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, and other forms of social and viral media.

CAN YOU ACTUALLY HELP PEOPLE? – We get calls from businesses who are
looking to be number one. They have a so-so product, they have a fairly decent price
but have no testimonials. What are people saying about your products or services? Word
travels fast on social media and staying true to solid principles really matters. Do
people have great things to say about your product or service? Does it change lives?

Are you creating a large fan base?

** We get calls from business owners. “A lot of companies do what you can do –

why should we pay you?”

Simple. Building websites, web media, publishing content, creating viral media takes

time and costs us money. This stuff isn’t just going to build itself. So we charge…..
 Fair enough?
The REAL question comes back down to the business owner and that is,
“What do you have to bring to the table?”

HIRE A COPYWRITER – AND A CONTENT WRITER
Here are two skill sets that you cannot fake. These guys aren’t the cheap and finding
good quality writers can be tricky. Get somebody with some experience. Most Michigan
business owners and entrepreneurs have never heard of these professions so I will
break them down for you.

What a copywriter does is write sales copy. He writes content that makes people want
to buy your services. He writes headlines, press releases, creates excitement and
encourages people to see the value in your goods and services. He is the life blood of
your business. If you can find one who can do the sales writing as well as the SEO and
pump you up in the search engines you struck gold.

A content writer works very similar to a copywriter. This is the guy who will write you 4
page articles that you can run on your website and get you some customers. This is the
guy who is going to get other people interested in your company. He will write you 8 page
articles and ebooks, PDF’s and special reports. You need a guy like this on your team
that can really state your case and let the people know what is so special about you. These
are hard to find too….. there are various degrees of talent when it comes to writing
original content.

I find anyone that sells parts or things  -- like jewelry, toilet parts, Yamaha ATV parts
and sell things on an apples and oranges mentality and go for the lowest price usually
have a tough time coming up with articles. They have a dickens of a time making themselves look interesting. But you better think about how to make yourself interesting if you want to
compete in this noisy social media world.

And you better learn how to engage people……

“Sounds Expensive… I’ll Buy My Web Traffic… and Do PPC”

Good luck.  Google is getting trickier to work with lately and some of the paid options like
PPC are becoming trickier to work with. The last campaigns we ran using PPC gave us a
low return and worse we didn’t see any spikes in our traffic in our analytics. This led us to
wonder where our money went to and what – if any value—was returned to us. This led our
company to pursue other paid options.
Some of these options included paid ads on Facebook, and promoted Tweets on Twitter.
We also created media that our selected fan base would really go after and this increased
the views on our pages tenfold. This type of careful planning does take time though and you
have to be strategic about how you find these people and how you get people to engage
and interact with your brand.

From a web traffic stand point it is highly effective. There is something you need to
know about web traffic and that is Google has been paying close attention to bounce
rates. This translates to how long people stay on your site. Remember that the
bounce rate works like a golf score – the lower – the better.

When the bounce rate is TOO HIGH… Google is getting suspicious and
will suspect that you are buying your web traffic from a cheap off shore
company or are feeding worthless bots into your site to increase its perceived
value. Rumors are bouncing around SEO circles and these web sites are
being tossed out of the search engines.

HOME IMPROVEMENT COMPANIES AND CATCHING UP
WITH THE PUBLIC

Back in the old days a company had to give themselves a gimmicky name like A-1
GRANITE TABLE TOP SERVICES and pay a fee for a phone directory and they would
be first in line. This used to work for web site domains too. It was easy to be number
one in home improvement and the business would come automatically. Businesses
worked like this for decades and this was how the game was done. But now in the
search engine world that is no longer good enough.

Now, the customers are voyeuristic. They will spy on you before they even call you.
That means they are going to check on your site, and read your reviews before they
even pick up a phone. If you have negative reviews, bad customer service, trash
talking customers then you will feel the backlash. You need to keep a clean image
and you need to be interesting.

You need someone to clean up your image and to protect it. You can either have your
staff members trained in how to do some of these things or you will have to hire it out.
And if you do I really don’t suggest you hire someone off shore in some other country
who can’t speak English. Many companies give that a shot first before they hire
someone local. They hire a guy from India, or China who can barely put an English
sentence together and jeopardize their whole business.

I’ve seen companies flop and fall off the edge of the earth by just trying to save a
few bucks a month.Another thing. Make sure you keep good records and get copies
of what ever digital
media you purchase. Management tends to change hands and when this happens
websites get lost, and problems arise. Never give your hired web help that kind of
power where they can forever clock out your lights.
A lot of businesses don’t even know themselves and they know even less about
their public. In this day and age that is foolish. You have to know your audience and
how they think, and how they will respond. Building rapport is just as important online
as it is in person. Too many companies have little more to offer the public than a flashing
billboard type website that has little more to offer than an address and a phone number.

LEARN TO CONNECT WITH YOUR AUDIENCE – and stay topical!

Ted Cantu - Rage Against The Media Machine

Whew -- what a wind up....

EVEN IF YOUR NUMBER ONE - ITS NOT ENOUGHBeing number one on the search engines is still not enough. You need to understand the shift that is happening with our media. As more newspapers close and fold up the big dogs move in and in this case its the Yellow Pages....There are other traditional media sources too such as Val Pak and the list goes on. There is a fundamental flaw with all of these big groups and that is they do not understand the web or how to use it.

The web is becoming more crowded and keeping your page 1 status may not be enough to get a new customer. More businesses are turning to the web and it is going to get very congested.

There are two things you will want to keep in mind -- even though you are on page 1.

1. How Strong Are Your URL's?Even though you have high ranking positions that doesn't mean your on page PR,( page rank)is going to be very high. So by all means strengthen it. Create valuable links to it through social media. This is very time consuming of course but you should have someone creating value for your web pages out there. Google still counts page rank as an important factor.

2. Create links, backlinks, and authority links....Create links to your websites. Make sure that you are creating great PR, (press releases)-- a different kind of PR. You know that whole "PR" thing is very confusing. We use it freely throughout the SEO world but you get the idea. Create content that references your business on the web. I like press releases and I like to put my companies into major media sources such as CBS News Watch and so on....

** IF you can possibly arrange it this is the way to market your company. Eventually after you get enough page 1 positions you can stop with your pay per click if that is a concern of yours.

Ted Cantu Is Not Only RIght and Ethical, He's A Damn Good SEO

"IM BACK, BIGGER THAN LIFE, AND TWICE AS UGLY !!"
You know the last few months have been pretty hysterical. Living in Metro Detroit one doesn't have the luxury of being a total putz. You really cannot hide here and expect to make decent money. First of all, our entire media framework has collapsed into rubble and our newspapers are on life support or out of business. There is nowhere to advertise.....

If you want to get the word out about your business you have two choices.... pay through the nose for pay per click, or take up religion. The religion option in Metro Detroit is a little over done, but many people opt for that solution.

I like to take on the search engines head on with SEO and face any or all rejection that comes with it. That way you can find find out just how good you are. This is something that a lot of companies are not willing to do. So many of them shrivel up and hide out and pray for another answer.

Search engine optimization will do more than keep your doctors office lights on - it will also keep you in business.

THE ONLINE MARKETING GURUS FALL APART IN 2010Going through the Rip Off Report recently was quite a shock, all of our old heroes of -- not so long ago -- have ended up in this garbage heap called, Rip Off Report. There are stories in there about the illusive Stephen Pierce, Jeff Paul, Matt, (the ex savior) Bacak, and of course Don Lapree. I actually fell asleep during one of Matt Bacaks presentations a few years ago. Some of these guys have really challenged the state and have found themselves in multi million dollar lawsuits and I find this interesting for several reasons.

Now before you jump all over these guys get something straight. These guys made a lot of money. Jeff Paul claimed that after he tried a few of Dan Kennedys techniques he actually pulled 30 million dollars in sales. I don't really know how accurate this can be but that is what he claimed on one of his tapes. A lot of what you find in his kit is some fairly decent information. It is watered down Dan Kennedy for the most part and that kit will only make sense to you if you have studied marketing for a long period of time. I had to order the thing twice in a two year period to see if any changes had been made to it and if it still made any sense to me.

The truth about these guys is that they did make a lot of money and because of it have slacked in customer service. This ranges from basic things like not answering the phone when things go sour to flat out hiding from their customers. Gary Halbert actually went to prison for stealing from his customers. The conduct of these individuals is pretty ridiculous. You will read reports of these guys taking as much as $50 grand off of their customers and not supplying any value.... heinous.

Im disappointed with these guys because I studied through them and learned a great deal about marketing through them. Well, most of them, that is... I have studied and learned a great deal from the ones who didn't rip me off. Some of them have ripped me off and I talk about that in this blog....

2011 - And Why Marketing MattersA few years ago marketing did not matter. We had graphic design and MTV. Those two things actually stood for something and we weren't bombarded with so much web stuff. People lost their jobs and then decided that marketing was the way to go. The truth is there are a lot of shitty marketers out there who should flat out quit the business and stop embarrasing all the rest of us. Just because you lost your job at GM doesn't mean you should be a marketer. All it means is that you should go out and get another job, somewhere else.

There is a need for good marketers however, especially now -- when traditional media is falling apart including newspapers and Yellow Pages. Online marketing makes the most sense to me as our country caves in and we lose our economic sensibilities to things like outsourcing.

To add more trauma to our economy comes MLM's and franchising. These rigid spinsters add all sorts of unnecessary rules and regulations to inflate their stuffed shirts and fractured thinking. They go out of their way to install fear, order, and limited profitability to the denizens they enslave. Most of these people, and I include mortgage, real estate and insurance in this group, need marketing the most as their industries are impacted by things out of their control -- such as big branding, and third party competition.

With so many rules and regulations as a Nation we have lost our basic liberties and freedoms. As for companies and industries out there in America who still have a choice on where to spend their marketing dollar I say that dollar is best invested in smart online makreting.

Just recently we are helping out these industries

Detroit Party Bus
Party Bus Detroit
GIA Certified Diamonds Michigan
Tag Heuer Watches Michigan

Putting these guys on Google, Yahoo and Bing not only keeps our economy alive in Michigan but also ensures longevity. This comes at a time in our day and age where many businesses in Troy, Michigan have vacated their storefronts.

Middle management is not the answer. Get up and do something to save your
dental practices, medical offices, and places of business.

I promise to over deliver to those people and my many fans in Metro Detroit” says Ted Cantu. “With the Ann Arbor News and Eccentric Newspapers going under you need a friend like me now more than ever before – I will have many wealth building strategies to share!” adds Cantu.

He is also famous for getting web commercials in front of 27,000 fans in just a few hours. Ted Cantu has placed companies on page 1 in as little as 15 minutes. Cantu has perfected various techniques to get the word out there that is not dependant on Yellow Pages, radio or expensive television spots.

He will be focusing on showing Metro Detroit how to, “Market, Sell and Profit In ANY Economy!” Cantu has literally written himself paychecks in over 50+ industries including everything from beauty products, wholesale, imports and exports, music, entertainment, dental, chiropractic, financial, self development, authors, health, real estate, mortgages, automotive and more.

Multiple Listings R Us

Check this out:

Don't submit your URL address multiple times during the day. Also don't submit hundreds of URLs from the same website. A much better technique is to create a site map with all your links on one page. Link to the site map from your home page so that the search engine spider can find all your pages easily.

Getting Multiple Listing on the Same Search Engine
There is an easy way to get multiple listings with the same search engines. The trick to this is to change the title of your page every month or so. This tricks the search engine robots into thinking that it is a whole new page. I have also seen sites that leave out the www when submitting their site.

==================

After all the crap I had to endure over my discovery of "Multiple Google Listings On The Same Page" I must say I found this post sort of a relief. Someone else is playing the "Cantu" game over here.... but the advice they give you here is pretty bad.

  • Are people, (outside of India) really submitting single URL pages to search engines these days? This is somewhat of a waste of time. My bets for getting listed multiple times really center around the following criteria:

  • Web Video
  • Podcasting Posts
  • PR - Press Releases

My book, "The 30 Day Business Makeover" has outlined that there are 9 families of search engines including, video, podcasting, articles, press releases, hubs, social bookmarking and so on. It is important for you to have media posted on all of these areas.

In either case - no matter what you believe - the truth is slipping out on the web after all this time. Pretty fascinating isn't it?

** Posted by Ted Cantu on July 5, 2009 at 4:18 PM - Cantu can be found in Farmington Hills, MI or Chicago and even sometimes, New York City..... Honest.

The Return of FRANK BLUESTEIN

Frank Bluestein Returns With Ted Cantu and Media Based Website

July 3, 2009 – Detroit, Michigan – HotMetroFinds.Com has launched with much anticipated response. The website is a part of iCantu Media LTD which is based out of Chicago. Ted Cantu who owns the company is creating a “living breathing web site” that includes some incredible web video commercials to be spread across the Internet. He has teamed up with Michigan based business developer Frank Bluestein, a retired financial advisor who ran a stock portfolio in excess of 100 million dollars.

Bluestein brings a unique perspective to the table when it comes to online promotion. He has run a very popular web site relating to stock tip picks, freedomroadtrading.com. This web site has brought in novices to seasoned professionals and have delivered great value over the past two years. Now Frank Bluestein will oversee the production and promotion of Cantu’s latest project, Chicago based, www.hotmetrofinds.com.

The idea to create the web site came with the recent collapse of several Michigan based newspapers. After a recent trip to the Windy City Cantu has this to say, “I noticed that the printed realm of advertising continued to shrink over time. I decided to create an open architecture web site that allowed users to rely primarily on the web browser for their search capacity. The end user didn’t really need to even know our web address to find what they needed. They simply needed to plug in a few keywords into their browser and our sites would pop up on the search engines.”

Metro Detroit and Chicago based businesses can get their company listed through iCantu Media through their choice of categories including restaurants, real estate, rentals, and retail. The listing fees are promised to be significantly cheaper than traditional advertising including television, radio and print.

The site has done a quiet launch over the 4th of July weekend, 2009.For additional information regarding Frank Bluestein and Ted Cantu you can contact them at 248.631.9211. You can also visit their website at http://www.hotmetrofinds.com.

Who's Holding The Keys?

TALES FROM THE DIGITAL SOUP KITCHEN

Looking for web help shouldn't be like looking for old rims and side mirrors for your car in the junk yard. You should get a quality product from the starting gate.

1. Look for the BBB

2. Get someone who is certified either in web building or in SEO
3. Get references

.. nuff said.

============================

The real stickler this week came from a newsource about web site designers keeping their customers hostage. They can do this somewhat legally by having ownership over the domain name and even the web site itself.

This rarely comes down to a legal court of law but it can. To keep things safe and sane I always give my partners full ownership over anything I create for them. I do not want to get into a sticky situation down the road. Remember that in a court of law you have to have proof.

Business owners get sloppy because they start to trust the "leader" a little too much. In fact, they let the leader steer the ship right into an iceberg. When things go sour, and this can happen for whatever reason, then the owner has a right to take his business elsewhere.

I would say about 20% of our business centers around looking for domain names, (registered in other countries) and also taking web sites back from deadbeat designers. Other times I have to track these web designers down and often times if they are real small they don't have an office. This means I have to track them down through friends and ex-business associates.

I actually tacked on a SUPER SLEUTH FEE for this service. I have to play detective for the defective and to do that takes money. The most annoying thing I feel about this process is that it eats up a good deal of my time. This is time that I could spend doing something else that is productive for my business.

To save everyone from a trail of disputes and the dreaded "HE SAID SHE SAID" take a tip from Cantu. Make sure you get EVERYTHING CONNECTED TO A WEB SITE PROJECT IN YOUR OWN NAME.

This includes:

* Domain names

* Web site hosting accounts
* Graphic services
* Add ons, (graphic enhancements)
* Form code
* Pictures
* Video
* Additional hosting information

Make sure you get everything in YOUR name and also make sure you have the passwords and usernames to access these accounts.

** I would install a policy that forbids us from entering a project of this nature. But the problem is that this is becoming very widespread. It becomes somewhat difficult to avoid this turmoil.

Make it easy on everyone by being a responsible business owner and take FULL OWNERSHIP.

ONE WEB SITE CANNOT "DO IT ALL"

"I Don't REALLY WANT Much From This World...... Except For Maybe World Domination"

This is all in fun of course dear ones !! I am going to do the best I can to keep this light hearted. But honestly, do you really expect to pull a big chunk out of your local market with a spinely five page web site?

This seems to be the rallying cry for anyone who sells these en masse. The poor people who buy them are being seriously misled. It is virtually impossible to create any type of long lasting impression off a web site that only has five pages and no contact information. I see a lot of these sites being sold through telecom groups, phone companies and MLM type people.

Its hard to get all the goods.... But lets face it with the way things are changing all over its hard to distinguish what those goods are. If you want to create some real impact with your audience then you need to figure out how to best reach them.

Check this out....
http://1seomichigan.com/3.html

Check out these types of sites and Internet marketing samples. You cannot get these same types of results from a web site that just merely showcases a phone number. It has to be more than a glorified electronic business card......

THE AGE OF INSTANT SATISFACTION

"This Goes Beyond Just Downloading POP MUSIC !!"

As I write this post I have just downloaded the entire Clash Catalog from ITUNES. I also grabbed some early punk classics this week by the DAMNED and Generation X. I am getting revved up for this new romp with REBEL MARKETING..... But more on that later.....

Its inspiring that we are living in an age of INSTANT SATISFACTION. This goes far beyond just instant downloaded songs for your IPOD and IPOD car stereo system! This type of instant gratification can come in the form of getting your web pages INSTANTLY INDEXED !!

If you haven't heard this new presentation you can hear about

how to get your Michigan Business off the ground .. and into the online orbit !!!

The other thing that you will have to get used to is the ability and freedom to get your marketing messages out there in the pubilc eye, (both audio and video). Lets get straight to the point this is going to cause a disruption into the radio and broadcasting industries.

THE NEW YORK TIMES
Just recently the New York Times ran this piece about how you can buy cheap radio airtime on Ebay. Imaging going to Ebay to bid for cheap airtime. I just found this in the June 6th edition and I couldn't believe what I was reading.

Just a year ago I was put into the CLOSING ROOM and interrogated into buying a 40 thousand dollar block of airtime. This was back when I was trying to get my Detroit area radio show off the ground. I had this miserable experience thrown on my lap no less than two times. I barely got out of the room in one piece. I was shaken and very upset. If you think used car salesmen have no heart.... (and.. most of them don't) they are harmless in comparrison.

This new approach to getting your marketing message out there tips the typical broadcasting world upside down and inside out. As a struggling company you have got to love that.

Even if your company is not struggling you can still save a fortune by placing your media into these distribution channels. The overall effect is just stunning. You no longer have to wait for a miniscule 10% return rate on your marketing efforts. You will know in a very short amount of time if you have an active audience for your products, goods and services.

In a very short amount of time. And the IPHONE is going to further elevate this knowledge base to you. The entire game as we know it is going to change in radical proportions.
