SEO - Seize The Market

The last few weeks have been interesting on the SEO front. There are too many companies out there who just, "Don't Get It". Just last week I delivered a program to a company and watched the face of the decision maker contort from dismay to total mental abandon.

The fear here was the prospect of a new Google algorithm. This is actually a valid reason for not wanting to commit to a search engine optimizaton program.

But what he socked me with next was actually eye popping. He wanted to put more dough into Yellow Page advertisements because he claimed at least it would get into more peoples hands.

WHERE IS OUR YELLOW BOOK?
Our yellow book was delivered during a rain storm. It sat in a plastic bag, unopened, for days on end until just a week ago. From there it was shuffled off into a corner to dry off. It was allowed a home out of sheer sympathy. There it sits waiting to be used.

Maybe one day I will use it if I have time.

My schedule lately has been one that demands instant gratification. If I need something then I need it right away. I cannot wait to get my answer. If I need a map, or directions, or a phone number of a service provider in my area for XYZ I never reach for the Yellow Book.

Either does a lot of our younger generation.

Generation X has limited means in this changing economy and they rarely do things in a predictable fashion. But Generation Y, (the youth generation that came after) has more buying power, are a lot more demanding and carry a more cynical attitude about the world around them. Not only are they a little more edgy but they are impatient. They demand answers at the touch of a button and grew up with Nintendo. Electronic gadgets and Google are all in a days effort for these kids. Chances are they are not going to go digging very deep to find your company in a Yellow Page ad. Forget about that 10% coupon and the hassle of getting a pair of scissors to cut it out. They would rather buy something online.

BEATING OUT 40 COMPETITORS
How do you get around 40 competitors in your field? It is going to be hard to do it with the kind of web sites most franchises have. A lot of franchises operate out of one web site. To find the location for a franchise you have to pull down a java menu. From there you need to get the city you want to do business in and get their web page.

Its amazing to me that many franchise owners, (many of which pay $156,000 or more to be in the franchise) consider this type of set up a "web site".

So doing something intelligent like having a separate web site with a different IP address does not often come up as a solution. This is what is going to set you apart with all your competitors. Take in for consideration that most web sites are not even positioned for Search engine optimization. Most sites come up blank and get a zero percent rating.

You need to have the right guts in your web site to make this happen.

GOOGLE GETS READY TO POWER YOU UP!

"DIGG These Email Tools To Add Some Punch"

Its important to watch out what Google is doing. Especially if you are looking to keep your pages fresh and relevant......

** I am surprised to see such incredible news about Google literally fall through the cracks of the people in the know. I mean there are a lot of tools that can be criss crossed with other techniques to create some real PR Bliss in your business.

When Arizona State offered to connect their email with DIGG and Google the public barely blinked an eye. This could be due to the fact that this type of digital technical hybrid "hot wiring" is far too geeky for the public.

Still, its important to keep abreast of this type of innovation when it comes along. Its encouraged me to keep a journal. Some third party web service companies crap out in 12 months and leave you hanging. There are a ton of services I got from TECH CRUNCH that did not live up to their hype in a few months after their debut.

Its great to figure out the relationship of these new emerging tools and to see how they can enhance your online presence.

Are You Sure You’re Core Audience Is Listening?

How Are You Found on Google?

After just reading some of the new Google search capabilities I really have to wonder.
Well, in fact I have just two main thoughts.

1.Does it really matter if you are on Google’s first page or not?
2. Are you at least indexed in Googles main index?

I think number two has a little more validity in the grand scheme of things. You see there are any number of ways your audience can search for you on Google. You should probably try picking up THE LOST GOOGLE MANUAL or GOOGLE: THE MISSING MANUAL as they will open your eyes to what’s around you. The real question lies in how are your audience members out there searching for you?

What words are they using is only half of the equation. But there are any number of ways that a person can look for a company using Google technology. You can use usergroups, niche directories, and using some of the newer services they provide. There are a lot of people out there who just type in sentence fragments to get what they want from the search engines.

The KEI words these days are getting LONGER AND LONGER….

But that is alright you just need to be aware of how people are using those
keywords to locate your business online……

To be continued……

THE AGE OF INSTANT SATISFACTION

"This Goes Beyond Just Downloading POP MUSIC !!"

As I write this post I have just downloaded the entire Clash Catalog from ITUNES. I also grabbed some early punk classics this week by the DAMNED and Generation X. I am getting revved up for this new romp with REBEL MARKETING..... But more on that later.....

Its inspiring that we are living in an age of INSTANT SATISFACTION. This goes far beyond just instant downloaded songs for your IPOD and IPOD car stereo system! This type of instant gratification can come in the form of getting your web pages INSTANTLY INDEXED !!

If you haven't heard this new presentation you can hear about

how to get your Michigan Business off the ground .. and into the online orbit !!!

The other thing that you will have to get used to is the ability and freedom to get your marketing messages out there in the pubilc eye, (both audio and video). Lets get straight to the point this is going to cause a disruption into the radio and broadcasting industries.

THE NEW YORK TIMES
Just recently the New York Times ran this piece about how you can buy cheap radio airtime on Ebay. Imaging going to Ebay to bid for cheap airtime. I just found this in the June 6th edition and I couldn't believe what I was reading.

Just a year ago I was put into the CLOSING ROOM and interrogated into buying a 40 thousand dollar block of airtime. This was back when I was trying to get my Detroit area radio show off the ground. I had this miserable experience thrown on my lap no less than two times. I barely got out of the room in one piece. I was shaken and very upset. If you think used car salesmen have no heart.... (and.. most of them don't) they are harmless in comparrison.

This new approach to getting your marketing message out there tips the typical broadcasting world upside down and inside out. As a struggling company you have got to love that.

Even if your company is not struggling you can still save a fortune by placing your media into these distribution channels. The overall effect is just stunning. You no longer have to wait for a miniscule 10% return rate on your marketing efforts. You will know in a very short amount of time if you have an active audience for your products, goods and services.

In a very short amount of time. And the IPHONE is going to further elevate this knowledge base to you. The entire game as we know it is going to change in radical proportions.

SEO Relevancy - Time To Take Out The Trash

"..... a little wine in the morning, a little breakfast at night ~ !! Woo oh boy I'm beginning to see the light !!!"
Lou Reed, and the Velvet Underground 1969

After this weeks walkout at the Ann Arbor IT Zone, (see Roundtable Discussion - click here) I can really only handle just a wee bit more of traditional black slapping and self congratulation related palaver. But the bottom line here is that a lot of people are out there looking for answers. Because of this recent influx of web development it is highly probable that most companies do not know what kind of questions to ask.

In fact, I am almost sure they don't.

The articles that I come across range from the very simplistic, (as in a recent USA Today article) to the more daring, (Web Builder Magazine). There are tools and techniques that fall between the cracks, (geek speak) and beginner books. You need a full comprehensive glimpse at all of the above before you can begin to get a good handle on what is out there.

Here is a recent article published in USA Today

Getting Noticed on the Web
“I've had my website up for a year, and as far as I know, I haven't found one new client from the Internet," says Balsam, 50. "I want that to change."

http://smallbusiness.aol.com/grow/marketing/article-partner/_a/how-to-get-google-to-notice-you/20070119182709990001

"Keywords direct the search engines to how to find you," Winfield says. "And links are the holy grail. If a lot of sites link to you, that means you have authority and should be placed higher than others.”

Balsam's front page was virtually devoid of text, beyond tabs for inside pages and contact information. Winfield says this is a huge no-no. Google's spider crawls the Internet compiling website information, looking to keywords on the page for how to reference the site.

You get the picture.....

Now, you know its the keywords that help your site get REAL star quality. This article merely illustrates a point and a common element that is missing from many campaigns. RELEVANCY. For the average geek, ( no matter what depth of your web expertise ) these types of articles come off as a bit clumsy and hard to stomach..... in short, its common sense.

To take it another level ANYONE could have wrote this piece. The web site company and the customer are mere variables in the equation of good communication skills. I find that articles like this only tell a fraction of the story. What you are looking at is merely the onion skin - the outer later - the outer peeling -- and what lies beneath the skin is a more tantalizing story. It is the real story that needs to be told.

This article is wimpy. It goes back to the tired and easy ABC way of describing the online phenomenon.....

"Attracting links may seem daunting at first, but it's easier than you might think. Most local chambers of commerce and trade associations have websites and will link to member websites."

ouch......

Joining a group like your local chamber all for the intention of trading links? My goodness, I think we are rolling through the stone age. I am getting that uncomfortable feeling at the pit of my stomach again.

This article even talks about how to create a simple blog.... Notice, its just ONE blog, it doesn't offer a strategy or even how to construct one with all the options. This is like a Chicago pizzaria tooting its own horn with only one topping, pepperoni, and then calling yourself THE BEST PIZZA ON PLANET EARTH..... Its this type of thinking that influences our CEO's in this country. Not because it is the more promising out of all the amazing technques that exist. It only gets attention because it is the loudest... for the time being.

If you want to see what a real blog network looks like then you should check these out.....
These examples contain the following....

* Links going in
* Links carrying information out
* Web video
* Harnassing Podcasting bandwidth and technology
* Using video vodcasting bandwidth and tools
* Google Analytics, (you can't see them but they are in the pages, tracking traffic)
* and a whole lot more.....
